Colossians 1:15 “Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:”
In Biblical times, the “firstborn” was a title signifying the inheritor of all that was the father’s, the one having full power and authority over all that was the father’s, and before the Levites were called into service the “firstborn” was dedicated to God (Exodus 22:29; Numbers 3:12) on behalf of the family. Thus, Jesus Christ is “the only begotten son” of our Heavenly Father and holds the Sovereign Office of “the firstborn”. He rules with total authority and power over “every creature”, for He Created everything and owns it all (Colossians 1:16): “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.” (John 1:1-4); and now, He Sovereignly Rules His Creation. The “firstborn of every creature” “is the image of the invisible God”; thus, as a son looks like, talks like, and acts like his father, “the firstborn of every creature” is in perfect union with and is just like the Heavenly Father. Furthermore, He is one in the Triune God (I John 5:7). As “the firstborn of every creature”, He reigns with Sovereign Power and Authority over all people and things, including all human rulers. He is the sole and supreme power and authority over His Church; for, it is the “church of the firstborn” (Hebrews 12:23). We have every reason to be content and at ease, for we are in GOOD HANDS!
