Hebrews 13:20 “Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, 21 Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.”
By “working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight” our “God” is merciful to “Make you perfect in every good work to do his will”. Without the internal “working” of our “God”, we cannot do “good work to do his will”. When Adam disobeyed God (Genesis 3:6), he plunged his entire posterity into a broken state of sin (Romans 5:12), and with sin came all manner of weaknesses and impurities making us unable to do “good work” in His service. In order for us to do “every good work”, the Lord does a “work” within us to push back the weaknesses brought about by sin and sinfulness. Said another way, He equips us and strengthens us with all that is necessary for us to do “every good work to do his will”. In general, the “every good work” refers to our Lord’s Commandments (John 14:15) for worship, service, faithfulness, integrity, kindness, brotherly love, morality, etc. And, “his commandments are not grievous” because He works “the love of God” within us (I John 5:3); thus, when we feel His mighty “love” for us, we are moved to “work” in His service because He causes us to “love” Him. Paul put it this way, “For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:” (II Corinthians 5:14), and he also tells us that “the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us” (Romans 5:5)! When the Lord works the joy and power of His “love” within us, we are both enabled and compelled to “deny” ourselves “and take up” our “cross daily, and follow” our Beloved Lord (Luke 9:23).
