Psalms 78:4 “We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.”
The Psalmist declared that “We will not hide” the “dark sayings of old” (Psalm 78:2) “from their children”; that is, from the generational children of their ancestors. The contextual message is that, in each generation, the leaders and parents will teach their children the “dark sayings of old”; however, these “sayings” remained “dark” (hidden) until Jesus Christ revealed their meaning in the New Testament. Each successive generation learned and taught their children these “dark sayings of old”; but, “These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.” (Hebrews 11:13), “And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:” (Hebrews 11:39). Year after year, the leaders and parents were “shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done”. They taught all the magnificent things that God had done for their ancestors and the things He was presently doing for them; but, the things those blessings prophetically pointed to, remained “dark” until the Lord arrived and “opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures” (Luke 24:45). And, following their example, we must plainly teach our next generation that our Lord Jesus Christ has come and that He “hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began” (II Timothy 1:9)! Paul put it this way: “I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:” (I Corinthians 15:3-4). Let us faithfully resolve that “We will not hide them from” the “children” in our generation!
