Psalm 18:1 “I will love thee, O LORD, my strength. 2 The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.”
We often feel that our tribulations are closing in on us like hateful enemies that are bent on our ruin. They seem to be all about us and are closing in on us, and we worry that others are lurking just beyond our sight. But, by the sweet mercy and grace of our Almighty “LORD”, we have an escape: “The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.” (Proverbs 18:10)! The “high tower” was built tall and often placed upon high ground to afford protection from the adversaries and allow long range observation of encroaching enemies and provide a superior fighting position. So it is with our “LORD”, in times of trouble, He is our “high tower” and we are blessed to flee to Him for “refuge” (II Samuel 22:3) until our trouble is passed. This blessed allegorical “high tower” comes clearly into view as we go to Him in prayer, as we read His Holy Word, as we seek to lovingly obey Him, and as we faithfully attend His Church. There is no peace and comfort on this earth like the open arms of our “LORD” in His “high tower”!
