Psalm 74:12 “For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.”
The “adversary” was a “reproach” to the people and was their “enemy”; so, the Psalmist prayerfully asked the Lord, “how long shall the adversary reproach” and “shall the enemy blaspheme thy name forever”? Then he asked the Lord, “Why withdrawest thou thy hand” from saving them from their enemies, and then he pleads with the Lord to “pluck” His “right hand” “out of” His “bosom” to execute some great thing to save them from their enemy’s cruel treatment (Psalms 74:10-11). He proclaimed that the Lord is able to do something, “For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.”; that is, historically He has shown, for all to see, that He has both the power and authority to work the needed “salvation” for His people. The Lord has shown that He has Sovereign power over “the sea”, power over the most dreadful beasts, power to make and recede floods, power over the “sun” that governs our time, and He has power over the seasons and every aspect of “the earth” (Psalms 74:13-17). Finally, he prays, “Arise, O God, plead thine own cause” and “Forget not the voice of thine enemies” who have defamed the Lord God Almighty (Psalms 74:22-23). We know that the Lord did do something to ease their sufferings; as Moses said, “(For the LORD thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.” (Deuteronomy 4:31), and the “LORD” Himself plainly declared, “For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.” (Malachi 3:6). He remains our “King” today, and we should look forward to Him again “working salvation in the midst of the earth” to deliver His “turtledove” (Psalms 74:19) from ruin; that is, his beloved Church and people!
