Deuteronomy 1:31 “And in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how that the LORD thy God bare thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came into this place.”
The older I get, the more I find my mind wandering back to the days when my children were small; I cherish every precious thought of them. When we were walking together, their little legs would get tired, so I would pick them up and carry them. When mowing the grass, they took turns riding upon my shoulders as I pushed the mower. If they fell, I rushed to pick them up to sooth their hurt. Sometimes they just wanted to be loved, so I picked them up and held them for a while. Oh, how blessed where those days! I wanted to be the best dad; but, the best I could possibly be was not perfect. But, our Heavenly Father is absolutely perfect in every way, He knows exactly what we need and immediately knows when we need it. In the waning days of his life, Moses reminded the Children of Israel that “God bare thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came into this place”; that is, He heard you crying in down in Egypt, then He sent deliverance to you, when you were frightened and discouraged He opened up the sea for you, when you were thirsty He gave you the best water you’ve ever tasted, when you were hungry He gave you nutritious food to eat every day, when you faced fearsome enemies He defeated them for you, and when you were cast down He embraced you under the Cloud of His Holy Presence with you. Furthermore, “as a man chasteneth his son, so the LORD thy God chasteneth thee” (Deuteronomy 8:5); when it was necessary for your spiritual upbringing, He chastened you. Moses was reminding them how lovingly their Heavenly Father had cared for them. And now, let us also remember that God our Father “is” still “rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us” (Ephesians 2:4), and that it is “our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace” (II Thessalonians 2:16)!
