Psalm 91:1 “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.”
The phrase “I will say of the LORD” points us to a plain-language summary of the Psalmist’s experience “in the secret place of the most High” and in abiding “under the shadow of the Almighty”. The Psalmist declares that “the LORD … is my refuge and my fortress”; therefore, he pointedly proclaims, “in him will I trust”. When the pressures, trials, troubles, pains, sorrows, fears, sadnesses, shame, etc. of this present world begin to weigh us down and it seems the weight of our tribulation is surely going to crush us; like the Psalmist, we have a blessed “refuge”, “fortress” and we can “trust” the Lord to protect and give us rest there. As Joseph Hart wrote in his beloved old hymn, “Come, ye sinner, poor and needy, Weak and wounded, sick and sore; Jesus ready stands to help you, Full of pity, love and power. I will arise and go to Jesus, He will embrace me in His arms; In the arms of my dear Savior, O there are ten thousand charms.”! We can “trust” Him because He is our “Good Shepherd” (John 10:11,14) and He will never forsake us (Isaiah 41:17)!
