Psalm 91:3 “Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. 4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.”
The “Lord” our “God” (Psalms 91:2) is “a very present help in trouble” (Psalms 46:1) and “He shall cover thee with his feathers”! From the chickens in the pen to the eagles in the wild, birds instinctively “cover” their brood with their “feathers” when there is a threat to their safety. So it is with our Lord and His beloved Children! When the mother hen senses that trouble is near, she clucks loudly and stands as tall as she can with her wings outstretched. The little fellows hear the alarm being sounded and they rush to get under their mother’s wings; when the last one is safely underneath, she sets down upon them and tightly closes her wings about them. If the fox comes near, the mother hen’s beak becomes a vicious weapon, and the fox soon looks for easier prey. Much like the clucking hen, our Lord lovingly sends His preachers with a “warning” message (Colossians 1:28), and those to whom the Lord has given a “hearing ear” (Proverbs 20:12); they flee to the Lord, and there they find peace, tender love, and security! Our Lord also works directly in our hearts, exhorting us to “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28). It is much like the son who was destitute and broken by his sin and oh so lonely and felt he was about to perish; under Divine Inspiration, “when he came to himself, he said, … I will arise and go to my father …” (Luke 15:17-18); and, “his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him” (Luke 15:20)! Therefore, let us “trust … in the LORD: he is” our “help and … shield” (Psalms 115:9)!
