Isaiah 53:2 “For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.”
Isaiah tells us that our Lord “hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him”; that is, the man Jesus Christ was not especially handsome nor attractive. He was rather plain looking. His appearance would not cause people to take special note of Him. Paul tells us that He “made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men” (Philippians 2:7); that is, He appeared to be an everyday working man and did not stand out as a great leader or someone with a high station in life. He was publicly viewed as “the carpenter, the son of Mary”, having a small-town family; He was “the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon”, and He had “sisters” (Mark 6:3). He was so common looking that, at first, even His own natural family did not believe Him: “His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest. 4 For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world. 5 For neither did his brethren believe in him.” (John 7:3-5). He didn’t have a house or even a tent to rest in; He tells us that “The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.” (Matthew 8:20); that is, in natural things He appeared homeless. There was nothing about the appearance of Jesus Christ that would entice a person to follow and worship Him. When Peter declared that Jesus Christ was the Son Of God, the Lord made it clear that “flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 16:17). Our Lord explained it this way, “No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him” (John 6:44) and “no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father” (John 6:65); but, “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me” (John 6:37); that is, people are not and will not be attracted to know, love, and follow Jesus Christ by carnal means; however, the Holy Spirit will directly reveal the Lord to each and every one of His Children. There is no greater joy and peace in this present world than that which is granted to the Children of God when they are Spiritually Drawn to Him!
