2025-04-01 “in the fourth watch of the night”

Matthew 14:23  “But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.  25  And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea26  And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.  27  But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

It was “in the fourth watch of the night” that “Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea”.  The storm was raging, their ship was “tossed with waves”, it was very dark, and the Lord’s Disciples were weary.  The Lord could have just stopped the storm and suddenly appeared in the ship with them, or He could have just simply stopped the storm and met them on the other side of the sea.  But He chose to go meet them “walking on the sea”, cementing in their minds and hearts that their Lord Commands Sovereign Power and Authority even over the most severe storms of life.  Furthermore, this event affirms to us that our Lord knows our every condition and is able to deliver us out of or through even the most dire troubles.  As death lurked about them, “the disciples saw him walking on the sea”; and, at first, they didn’t recognize Him, “they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear”.  “But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid”; He lovingly assured them that they were not alone, but that He was with them even in the very midst of the awful storm.  The same Lord is still our Sovereign “good shepherd” (John 10:11), even at this very moment!
