Matthew 14:29 “And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. 31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?”
Peter had just seen the Lord feed “five thousand men, beside women and children” with “five loaves” and “two fishes”, and after all had eaten there “remained twelve baskets full” (Matthew 14:15-21). Furthermore, the Lord was right there before Him walking on the water, and he himself was walking on the water. Yet, when “when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink”. Then, the Lord rebuked him, asking him “wherefore didst thou doubt?”; he had wavered in the face of the storm. Peter wavered between his natural reasoning and his Spiritual Faith. With his natural reasoning, Peter knew that he was about to drown. But, relying on his Spiritual Faith he had been able to defy natural reasoning and walk on the water. When faced with the storms of our lives, we are much like Peter, we tend to waver in the face of our storms. We are exhorted to “ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.” (James 1:6). To overcome wavering, doubting, Paul exhorts us to remember that it is the Lord “Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us” (II Corinthians 1:10); that is, He has delivered us from our storms in the past, He is delivering us from our present storms right now, and He will deliver us from our through our future storms!
