Psalms 61:2 “From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”
The grace and mercy of our God is not limited to a place, a building, a fixture, or a person. Our God is omnipresent; thus, wherever He is, His grace and mercy is with him. So, the Psalmist cried unto the Lord, “when my heart is overwhelmed”; that is, wherever I may be or whatever condition I might be in; when I am sinking beneath my troubles and am about to drown in them, “lead me to the rock that is higher than I”. He is crying, I cannot save myself, so please take me by my hand and draw me out of this mire that is overwhelming me and “lead me to the rock that is higher than I”; that is, “higher than I” can ever possibly attain unto by myself. In remembering past overwhelming troubles, the Psalmist joyfully proclaimed, “He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.” (Psalms 40:2). In another time, he confidently declared in the present tense, “The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.” (Psalms 18:2)! The “rock that is higher than I” points us directly to Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. No matter what our overwhelming troubles may be or wherever we may be on this “earth” our Lord is present to hear our cry. No matter how severe our troubles may be, our Lord is omnipotent, He has infinite power and authority; thus, He is able to lead us through or pluck us up out of our troubles! Even, when our troubles are our own sin, he is faithful to forgive and to lead us to the high places of His peace and joy! By our God-given faith, knowing this blessed truth to be so, let us worshipfully declare with the Psalmist, “I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings.” (Psalm 61:4)!
