Philippians 1:6 “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:”
At this present time, it sometimes seems that everything around us is fluid, and nothing is strong and stable whereby we might take comfort in the face of trouble and confusion. In just such times as these, the Apostle Paul’s confidence rested in “the faith of God” (Romans 3:3), the “faith of Jesus Christ” (Romans 3:23, Galatians 2:16), and “the faith of the gospel” (Philippians 1:27); that is, his confidence was strong and secure in the perfect reliability “of God”, “of Jesus Christ”, and “of the gospel”. His confidence securely rested in the “God, that cannot lie” (Titus 1:2)! In a similar Old Testament time, the Lord told Judah, “The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.” (Zephaniah 3:17)! We can likewise be “confident of this very thing, that” God “which hath begun a good work in” us “will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ”; that is, until that wonderful “day” in which the Lord “Jesus Christ” will appear in the heavens and Command, “Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world” (Matthew 25:34)! The “good work” that the Lord had “begun” in Philippi, is this very day being performed by the perfectly reliable God in various towns and places all around the world. The Lord’s “good work” affords us “a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble” (Psalms 9:9) and a “defence and refuge in the day of my trouble” (Psalms 59:16); thus, we can worshipfully proclaim “O LORD, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction” (Jeremiah 16:19)!
