Psalm 123:1 “Unto thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens.”
Children of God have two sets of eyes and ears! We have natural eyes and ears, but we also have the Spiritual Eyes and Ears that God gives us at the very instant that He gives us Spiritual Birth (Proverbs 20:12, John 3:1-8). With our Spiritual “eyes”, we can “lift up” our “eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh” our “help” (Psalms 121:1); that is, we can look “up”, far beyond ourselves and our present troubles to the greatest power of all, the Lord, our Almighty God. He “dwellest in the heavens”; that is, He is both physically and spiritually above and over all things and all peoples. His power and wisdom are infinite and His love for us is great (Ephesians 2:4) and we can never be separated from His great love (Romans 8:35-39). He is both the Creator and ruler of His entire Creation; thus, He has the power and authority to help us and to deliver us from evil things and evil people. By the grace and mercy of our Great God, we can “lift” our “eyes” up to Him in prayer and worshipful adoration and commitment to serve Him. Furthermore, as we “lift” our “eyes” up to Him in prayer, we can declare with Job, “I know that my redeemer liveth … Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me” (Job 19:25-27). And, we can lift up our eyes to Him at the “throne of grace” and surely “find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16)! Amazingly, even naturally blind folks can lift up their Spiritual Eyes and behold the glory and majesty of our Lord!
